The Survey Sample

The 2024 New England Survey was not voluntary. All the data used in this study are in the public domain in the form of audited financial statements and IPEDS reports.  The Survey looks at most of the private, midsize, tuition-dependent colleges and universities in New England. Enrollments are between 1,000 and 5,000 +/-. Endowments are in the range of $1 billion or less. And schools with significant research portfolios are excluded.

The Survey database includes 144 unique and derived pieces of information on each school, focusing on all the drivers that impact each schools financial health and well-being.  And here are some profile averages for the 44 schools that were included in the Survey analysis and reported statistics.  And below that are the 8 schools for which data were gathered initially,  but were excluded because of the size of their student bodies, their endowments, their research portfolios or any combination of these factors to ensure the homogeneity of  the Survey sample itself.  Bear in mind that these are averages for this group.  Since the sample is small and individual schools were excluded for different reasons, the variation around the means is more significant. All dollars are in millions ("mm") as illustrated only in the "Research" columns.   Note the similarities: Enrollment,   Modest "Operating Net" and almost identical "Comp %  of Total Expense"; and the marked differences:  Research, Cash, Endowment and Fixed Assets.

But, most important, note the immediate impact the Survey schools have in terms of the number of students they teach, their annual economic impact on the region, and the number of faculty and staff that rely on them for their livelihoods and their professional contributions.
